Movies Made in Waxahachie

Hollywood and the movie industry agree that Waxahachie is PICTURE perfect! Bonnie and Clyde, Tender Mercies and Places in the Heart were filmed in Waxahachie which is recognized as one of the top spots in the nation for film and video production. 

Bethlehem Revisited - Travel back to Old World Bethlehem as it was at the time of Christ’s birth. Rated “the #1 Holiday Event for the Lone Star State” by Fox 4 News in 2001. Open Friday-Sunday the first 2 weekends of December from 6 pm-9 pm. Located behind the Central Presbyterian Church, 402 North College Street.

Chautauqua Auditorium, located in Getzendaner Park, is one of the few remaining octagonal auditoriums in America. Open during special events and Chautauqua Assembly. www.waxahachiechautauqua.org

Courthouse Park
, established in 2003, provides a rest area, ATM, information kiosk and restrooms for visitors’ convenience. Located across from the Ellis County Courthouse in historic downtown.

Ellis County Courthouse, built in 1895,  (Photos)  is listed in the top 100 most photographed structures in the State of Texas, featuring Richardson Romanesque architectural style. The Courthouse is also celebrating its recent $15 million restoration. Visit the Courthouse downtown on the square. 

Ellis County Fine Arts Museum is proud to showcase art from the outstanding talents of area residents. Located at 501 W. Main Street, 972-937-3910. 

The Ellis County Museum and Visitor Center, located at 201 S. College, 972-937-0681. A repository for materials contributing to historical interpretation, it rekindles the past, as it highlights the rich history of Ellis County. The museum is housed in an 1889 structure located in downtown Waxahachie across from the Ellis County Courthouse. Museum Hours: Mon – Sat 10 am – 5 pm. Sun. 1 pm – 4 pm. 


Getzendaner Memorial Park is a peaceful place for your family picnic, or to escape to nature after a hectic business meeting. Located 2 blocks south of Business 287 (W. Main Street) and Grand Avenue.

Joshua Chapel AME Church, ( Ginger Bread Trail 2004 )located at 110 Aiken, is a prominent architectural, social and religious landmark. This building was designed in 1917 by noted black architect William Sidney Pittman.

Lake Waxahachie is located 2 miles south of Waxahachie off FM 877. Bring your family, boat and jet skis. Excellent source of fishing for crappie, white bass, largemouth bass and channel catfish.

Screams Halloween Theme Park is the world’s largest Halloween theme park. Open Friday-Sunday, October 1-31. Gates open at 7 p.m. I-35E south, exit 399A. 972-938-3247. www.screamspark.com.

Sims Library, featuring over 125,000 volumes, is an excellent example of a Neoclassical Building and is a popular stop on the Waxahachie driving tour. Located at 515 W. Main, 972-937-2671.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University is located in historic buildings once occupied by Trinity University, and an example of the Jacobean Revival architectural style. Located at 1200 Sycamore, 972-937-4010. www.sagu.edu

Texas Motorplex is a world renowned NHRA Drag Racing facility and multi-purpose venue hosting racing events, concerts, and more. Located on U.S. 287 between Waxahachie and Ennis, 972-878-2641. www.texasmotorplex.com 


The Texas Theater is "Waxahachie's Home of Texas Music." Built in 1895, The Texas is also one of Waxahachie's original theaters. Located in the Historic Downtown District on Main Street, www.texasmusictheater.com.

Waxahachie Country Club is open to the public for golf Tuesday-Friday. Located at 1920 W. Highway 287 Business, 972-938-9292. 

Waxahachie Creek Hike & Bike Trail. Walk or ride along the beautiful, winding pathway meandering down the Waxahachie Creek through scenic woods. The linear trail stretches from Getzendaner Park, through the city's historic cemetery to Lions Park for 4 miles.

Waxahachie Senior Citizens Center hosts bingo, dominoes and many senior activities. The center is located at 219 Patrick, 972-937-8271.

Waxahachie Symphony Association brings high caliber classical and jazz performances to Waxahachie throughout the year. 

Wyatt Street Shotgun House Historic District, located on the east side of the 300 block of Wyatt Street. This district contains a row of distinctive small, single-family shotgun dwellings built around 1918.
